Betwixt organic and inorganic life

Some amazing work from the University of Glasgow, showing how some of the characteristics of living cells can be realised in purely inorganic systems. By using phosphotungstic acid (a type of polyoxometalate) mixed with different reagents the group showed it could form discrete particles with semi-porous surfaces and potentially capable of supporting ion gradients, which are essential to generate the 'energy of life'.
